Where’s the football gone? That is what everyone is asking themselves and thanks to a combination of continually inclement weather and the fixture computer, Newcastle Blue Star have been largely kicking their heels in 2025.
Marc Nash’s men have been afforded just two opportunities to undertake competitive action since the turn of the year and have not kicked a single ball in anger within the past fortnight – a scenario that has given an advantage to Blue Star’s fellow promotion hopefuls.
While Blue Star have been kicking their heels and taking a largely enforced rest, those around them have been able to put points on the board and as a consequence the KD Stadium outfit have dropped out of the playoff paying positions.
Points on the board elsewhere, games in hand for Blue Star and with this portion of the season already set to be a sprint, the promotion pace is going to have to be picked up across the next few weeks.
Although Blue Star go into their midweek trip to West Allotment sitting seventh in the standings, they are still only a point behind Newcastle Benfield and perhaps more importantly, the team that did the double over the Scotswood outfit have played four games more.
Not only that, but of all the teams that currently occupy a position in the top seven, it is Blue Star who have played the fewest matches to date and as a consequence, they have games in hand on the six teams above them.
Which will now be a test of that old age question at this stage of the season. Is it better to have points in the bank or the additional games in hand to earn more? The answer to that is debatable but there is no debate as far as Nash and his players are concerned.
All they can do is pick up the wins and let the table recalibrate itself in a more positive position than it currently it is now. The way to do that is by going on a winning streak and a streak that starts on Tuesday night.
Something which sets up tonight’s clash rather nicely indeed. A big thanks to West Allotment for their upcoming hospitality and for those attending from an away perspective, safe travels both there and back.
