Although it was an early start at the weekend, there was nothing in the way of slumber from Newcastle Blue Star on Saturday. A trip to Whickham scheduled for 11:00, the objective to earn maximum points before lunch was served.
An objective that was not only met but it was met in some style and after the frustration of the fog enveloping Crook Town’s pitch on Wednesday night, that frustration was taken out on the Whickham defence nearly 72 hours later.
A five-star performance from Mark Nash’s men and one that saw them race into the lead in the first 60 seconds of the game. Paul Dudgeon may have seen a goal scrubbed off the record books in midweek, his Saturday effort was underlined in indelible ink.
Dudgeon getting the scoring underway, four of his teammates – including Sean Reid who also scored a phantom goal at Crook also on the scoresheet and as pleasing as any away success will be, to see five different players score would have put an even wider smile on the Blue Star management team.
If they were smiling after seeing Blue Star eventually cruise to a 5-2 win on the road, those fans in attendance or keeping abreast of updates on social media would have been beaming by the time the other results of the day filtered through later that afternoon.
Blue Star were waiting patiently on the fringes of the promotion pack before the weekend’s events got underway, their second win in successive league games now sees them moved up to fifth before Tuesday’s trip to Redcar Athletic.
Fifth with games in hand on the four teams that sit above and they face one off the quartet on Tuesday. A trip to Redcar Athletic arguably providing the toughest test of the four on paper as it is the upcoming hosts who are currently top of the class.
Four points clear having played a game less than Blyth Town in second, puts this Redcar Athletic team in a rather strong position and one that they will want to strengthen further. At the same time, the team they will soon host in just a few hours are looking to continue their current charge up the table.
Something which sets up this clash rather nicely indeed. A big thanks to Redcar Athletic for the upcoming hospitality and for those attending from an away perspective, safe travels both there and back.
