Player Watch: Guisborough Town

By James Young

Newcastle Blue Star will make the long trip down to Guisborough Town on Saturday to play their first league game in 2025.

Guisborough currently sit in sixth in league just one position behind Blue Star, however they have played three extra games.

Blue Star will be looking to get revenge as they lost 2-0 in the reverse fixture all the way back in August.

Today I will be looking at key players for Guisborough which Blue Star will need to keep a close eye on if they are to come away with all three points.

1.)    Joseph Pickett – 24 – Midfielder

Pickett is one for Blue Star to look out for. He scored in the reverse fixture back in August. Pickett only recently found his goal scoring touch as he scored only six in the first four months of the season.

When it hit December, he transformed into a goal scoring midfielder managing to score seven goals in seven games to help Guisborough to important victories against Penrith and Boro Rangers.

It is also good knowing that Pickett does enjoy a long-range strike so Blue Star will need to not give him space on the edge of the box.

2.)    Kurtis Howes - 24 – Attacker

The man leading the line this season has been Howes, and he has contributed effectively scoring 12 goals so far this season. He recently just got a brace in Guisborough victory 4-0 victory against Boro Rangers.

In every game Howes has scored in this season Guisborough have not lost one of them.

Howes poses a big threat and is very composed in front of goal and he enjoys striking the ball low and hard into the back of the net when he is one on one with keeper.

3.)    Joseph Smith – Midfielder

Despite not scoring this season the Smith has impressed as he does the dirty work for Guisborough which helps advance the team forward up the pitch quickly.

He possesses the ability of wide range passing and links up the play well in the middle of the park.

Smith isn’t afraid to put a tackle in and will wear his heart on his sleeve and he will also put in the hard yards as he is the engine in the team.

Guisborough will be looking to get back to winning ways after losing to West Allotment Celtic in the cup 3-2 in midweek and before that they lost to league leader Redcar Athletic 2-0 last weekend. A victory on Saturday could see them move up to second in the table if results go in their favour.

As for Blue Star they will be hoping to play their first league game of 2025 after multiple postponement,  but last week they played Ryton and Crawcrook Albion in a friendly to keep match sharpness and they came out 4-3 winners in an entertaining match.

Blue Star have been in good form in the league only losing one in their last eight games leading them to sit fifth in the table heading into Saturday’s match.
