You wait for one clash against Whickham and then two almost come along at once. Admittedly quickfire returns can come around when league and cup fixtures demand so but it is not something you usually see purely within the league schedule.
However, the fixture computer has served up a second meeting between Newcastle Blue Star and Whickham in as many weekends and after Marc Nash’s men ran out resounding 5-2 winners last Saturday, they will be keen to achieve more of the same at Scotswood this weekend.
Not only that, but they will be keen to return to winning ways after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Redcar Athletic on Tuesday night. Defeat that sees Blue Star drop back out of the top five they found themselves in after Saturday’s victory.
Their reverse in Redcar can certainly be considered a learning curve for this ever-learning Blue Star squad and although they went toe-to-toe with the league leaders, it was they that managed to find the necessary knockout blows when it mattered most.
With that said, it must be noted that there were positives to take from Tuesday’s performance and if that is the level on show more often than not between now and end of the season, a top-five finish and a ticket to the playoffs is not out of the equation.
That same level was on show last Saturday against this Saturday’s opponents and with goals coming from five different members of the Blue Star team, it shows that when it truly clicks goals can be scored from many different departments.
Each of those departments will have to be at their best as the familiar faces of Whickham will be keen to not only exact revenge for seven days prior but also pick up a much needed win to put more daylight between themselves and the bottom two teams in the Northern League Division One.
Something which sets up this upcoming clash rather nicely. A warm welcome goes out to the visiting Whickham team and support and for those who lend their voice to the home team, make sure to bring the noise throughout.
