With January feeling like it has lasted for 61 days rather than 31, we can now thankfully put the first month of the year behind us and with that, we can now hopefully put last month’s string of bad weather in the rearview mirror.
Weather that claimed no fewer than four Newcastle Blue Star fixtures and with a re-arranged trip to Marske United being foiled at the backend of January, it now means Marc Nash’s men have seven league encounters in the month of February.
The first of which sees local rivals Newcastle Benfield make the short trip to the KD Stadium and with the two teams meeting as recently as Boxing Day, it was Paul Brayson’s side that ended the fixture full of festive cheer.
A 1-0 win before the leftovers had been tucked into was not the result that Blue Star would have hoped for but it is a result that has offered Tuesday’s hosts something of a wakeup call when it comes to performance.
A wakeup call that has seen Blue Star faultless in the rare opportunities where the weather has behaved itself since Boxing Day and in the two league outings after the 1-0 defeat to Tuesday’s visitors, the Scotswood outfit have picked up back-to-back wins.
Back-to-back wins with their backs against the wall at times and with a 2-1 away win at North Shields then being followed by a 1-0 away win over Guisborough Town, defence has been just as important as attack.
A point that signified by Blue Star conceding the fewest goals of those teams that were sitting between second and fifth at the time of writing and with no weekend activity for either team to call upon, it will be interesting to see what league places either side has before Tuesday’s kickoff.
Something which sets up this upcoming clash rather nicely. A warm welcome goes out to the visiting Newcastle Benfield team and support and for those who lend their voice to the home team, make sure to bring the noise throughout.
