One of the benefits of getting your game in first is that you can then ask questions of your nearest rivals across the rest of the weekend and with Newcastle Blue Star strolling past Whitley Bay on Friday, those asked failed to have the answers the following day.
Redcar Athletic inactive in terms of league action last Saturday, Blyth Town and Boro Rangers both slipping to defeat that same day and as a consequence of this combination, Marc Nash’s men have now moved up to third in the table.
Not only have they moved up a position since their last league outing but they have also closed the gap on the two teams above and with just four points separating the top three, the festive period is now set to be a cracker.
While it was a cracking performance from Blue Star at the KD Stadium on Friday as they made light work of visitors Whitley Bay. A 2-0 lead at the break thanks to goals from Dan Lanning and Paul Dudgeon would eventually become a 4-1 win thanks to the same pair scoring after the interval.
Victory that not only saw progress up the league ladder but also secured Blue Star’s standing as the form team in the Northern League Division One at present. 16 points from the last 18 have been collected, the only blot if you can call it that was the recent 2-2 draw at Easington Colliery.
Dropped points it may have been but to even earn a share of the points when 2-0 down is testament to this current Blue Star crop and if anything, the character shown in that comeback has been the platform from which to build from.
The building blocks for another promotion push are now well in place but Tuesday night sees the priority switch to League Cup action and with Darlington Town making the journey to NE15, they will be keen to cause an upset.
The Northern League Division Two outfit won last season’s edition of the Wearside League and have acclimatised well to their new surroundings. With them sitting comfortably midtable at present, they will now look to make life uncomfortable for their hosts.
Something which sets up this upcoming clash rather nicely. A warm welcome goes out to the visiting Darlington Town team and support and for those who lend their voice to the home team, make sure to bring the noise throughout.
