Back-to-back home league matches for Newcastle Blue Star, back-to-back league wins on the board and if Marc Nash’s men made life rather difficult for themselves on Saturday, they were operating at a far more comfortable level on Tuesday.
Edging past Whickham at the weekend, easing past Carlisle City just over 72 hours later and although it took a while for Blue Star to find their rhythm in midweek, they were hitting the high notes when the full time whistle was blown.
A slightly cagey first half took on a different complexion when Chris Reid fired home from close range with just a couple of minutes remaining and although Dan Lanning also had a chance to double Blue Star’s lead before the break, a one-goal advantage seemed fair reward at the interval.
However, that reward was only increased in the second half. Although Matty Dopson knew very little about his touch of the ball, it was enough to deflect it past the visiting goalkeeper and double the hosts advantage.
Blue Star on top in the game and still with enough desire to add to the scoresheet. Desire that saw Rio Joisce’s fine finish from the edge of the box make it 3-0 with moments to go and more importantly add another three league points to current tally.
A tally that thanks to winning one of their games in hand sees Blue Star now sit fourth in the Northern League Division One table and with them in the position of best of the rest, they now want to try and bridge the gap to the best.
A gap that has been created by three teams above and one of the trio that are creeping into the distance are Saturday’s opponents Blyth Town – a team that we know well from last season’s outings in the division below.
Two late season clashes, two very entertaining encounters and two where the points were shared. Both teams going toe-to-toe on the respective afternoons, both believing they should been the victor in very even affairs.
While both teams after earning promotion a few months ago are not here to make up the numbers in their new surroundings, instead they want to be the gold standard and high standards from both sides are expected to be on show this weekend.
Something which sets up this upcoming clash rather nicely. A warm welcome goes out to the visiting Blyth Town team and support and for those who lend their voice to the home team, make sure to bring the noise throughout.
