Newcastle Blue Star 5-1 Washington FC (16/12/2023)

Yesterday, Marc Nash secured his first win as Blue Star manager as his side ran out 5-1 winners against Washington FC.

A brace from Dan Lanning and goals from Matty Telfer, Callum Larmouth and Regan Paterson meant Blue Star returned to the top of the Northern League Division Two.

It had been a weather-affected few weeks for both teams, with neither side having played 90 minutes for over three weeks. Blue Star would also enter the fixture with a number of new faces in the matchday squad with five players making their debut.

Heading into the game as strong favourites, it was no surprise to see Blue Star dominate the ball early on. All that possession would eventually lead to an opening goal in the 21st minute, when Lanning latched onto a mistake and rounded the keeper, to tap home the opener.

Blue Star would not stop there, however, adding a second goal just two minutes later through Lanning, with the striker finding a yard of space and firing home into the bottom left corner.

‘The Star’ would push for a third before the break but the score would remain 2-0 at the half-time interval.

The home side started the second half looking to extend their lead and they would do exactly that in the 65th minute – with debutant Paterson calmly slotting past the Washington keeper.

Fellow debutant Larmouth, would then grab a debut-day goal for himself just three minutes later, adding a fourth goal with a fantastic looping header.

Substitute Telfer, would then rub salt into the wounds of the away side, making it 5-0 in the 71st minute and grabbing his first goal for the club.

Just as it seemed as if ‘The Star’ would cruise to a 5-0 victory, Washington would grab themselves a consolation goal in the 77th minute, after a mix-up in the Blue Star backline.

The referee would soon then blow the final whistle and confirm Blue Star as comfortable 5-1 victors.
