Newcastle Blue Star returned to winning ways on Friday, defeating Prudhoe YC by two goals to nil.
Goals from Nelson Ogbewe and Dan Lanning handed ‘The Star’ the three points – keeping them in the automatic promotion hunt.
Heading into the game, Blue Star would have been looking to bounce back after a disappointing 5-0 loss against Easington Colliery last time out. Prudhoe YC visited Scotswood also looking to get back on the winning trail having not tasted victory since early October.
With the rain thrashing down on Scotswood, both teams would be hampered by the heavy pitch in the first half. Both sides would see little to no goalmouth action in the first half, with the majority of chances coming in the form of speculative long-range efforts.
It would remain a 0-0 stalemate heading into the halftime break with both backlines remaining resolute.
Looking to right the wrongs of the first half, Blue Star came flying out of the traps in the second half.
Taking the lead in the 55th minute, with Ogbewe prodding the ball home after some clever build-up play.
Following their opener, ‘The Star’ went in search of a second but had to wait until the 81st minute to get the goal they desired. Substitute Lanning would be the man to double Blue Star’s advantage, arrowing a shot perfectly into the far corner.
Blue Star’s second goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the away side and the game would peter out for a 2-0 win for the ‘The Star’.
