Marske United vs Newcastle Blue Star (28/01/2025)

Although January is usually a busy month in the footballing calendar, the weather has had largely put a halt to that and with February lurking around the corner, it was only last Saturday that saw Newcastle Blue Star finally return to the competitive field.

Foiled three times by the weather, slight doubt as to whether the climate was going to earn a fourth successive win. However, the damage that Storm Eowyn made over the weekend did not bring its way over to Guisborough.

The town’s team sitting sixth in the table before last weekend’s activity, one position behind Blue Star in fifth and with both sides aspiring of finishing in the play-offs, it was always set to be a cagey affair at King George V Ground.

While the assumption pre-match played out to a tee across the 90 minutes and with the two sides set to go into the interval having failed to breach their opponents defence, a moment of madness from a Guisborough defender turned the game on its head.

Turning the game on its head after a stamp on Chris Reid’s head and with this act being spotted by the referee, it meant the hosts were down to 10 men -Blue Star’s defender having to play with a bandage on his cranium for the rest of the game.

Not only were the hosts a man down but soon after they were a goal down. Dan Lanning’s ice cool persona from the spot once again on show and once again, the Blue Star forward etched his name on the scoresheet.

An etching that would turn out to be the scoresheet’s only entry and with Marc Nash’s men having to hold out from the inevitable kitchen sink being thrown at them late on, three points also means further progress up the table.

Fifth at the start of the day now reads as fourth as we move into the midweek schedule and with a trip to Marske United planned in just a few hours, Blue Star will want to keep their positive momentum going at full tilt.

Not only that, but they will be keen to exact revenge for the opening day defeat they suffered at the now named KD Stadium. A 2-1 defeat to Marske back in July but a lot has changed since then and the return clash should be a rather interesting one.

Something which sets up tonight’s clash rather nicely indeed. A big thanks to Marske United for their upcoming hospitality and for those attending from an away perspective, safe travels both there and back.
