Although the weather has foiled this fixture on a number of occasions, the conditions look good for football in Marske tonight and with the schedule between now and the end of the season already looking congested, this will be music to the ears of Newcastle Blue Star.
With 11 games of the season still to play, the last thing Blue Star need is further setbacks in terms of scheduling and especially when they still have a number of games in hand on those teams who are looking to earn promotion at the end of the season.
While Blue Star’s own playoff bid was given a shot in the arm on Saturday and although there was a minimal amount of chances created at the KD Stadium, a maximum amount of points were collected at the expense of visitors Penrith.
Just like a few days before at West Allotment, Michael Ndiweni’s anticipation was key and with a long ball being delivered by Dan Lister in Blue Star’s the subsequent bounce and flick on off the ball would see it land in the pathway of the forward.
Ndiweni showing enough composure in front of goal to send the home fans into rapture and also send the home club further ahead the handful of teams that currently find themselves outside of the playoff places.
Victory for Blue Star means that there is a four-point cushion over Newcastle Benfield in sixth and perhaps more importantly, Marc Nash’s men have three games in hand over the team trying to nip at their heels.
Then again, it is Nash and his players that want to use those same games in hand to nip at the heels at the four teams above and with season defining fixtures still to be played in March and April, picking up more points in February will be fundamental to any promotion bid.
A bid that continues this evening and it does so against a team that got the better of Blue Star at Scotswood on the opening day of the season. Tonight’s hosts keen to do the double. Tonight’s visitors keen to exact revenge.
Something which sets up tonight’s clash rather nicely indeed. A big thanks to Marske United for their upcoming hospitality and for those attending from an away perspective, safe travels both there and back.
