Guisborough Town 0 - 1 Newcastle Blue Star (25/01/25)

By James Young

A crucial victory for Blue Star against Guisborough Town as the race for the playoffs intensifies.

It was a Dan Lanning penalty on the stroke of half time which secured Blue Star all three points at the King George V Stadium following a red card for James Frazer after he stamped on Chris Reid.

Guisborough came into this game looking to get back to winning ways and leapfrog Blue Star in the table after losing 3-2 against West Allotment in the cup and before that lost to league leaders Redcar Athletic 2-0.

As for Blue Star they were hoping to play their first league game of 2025 after three postponements, though they recently won a friendly 4-3 against Ryton and Crawcrook. In their last league game, they beat North Shields 2-1.

Guisborough made multiple changes to the starting eleven following their last game with Robert Dean, Callum Martin, Matthew Crust, Mason McNeil, Ben Jackson and new signing Cole Kiernan all starting a major shake-up from midweek.

Blue Star manager Marc Nash made a few changes to the team which won last time out as Jack Daley, Max Emmerson and Luke Heppell all came into the team replacing Matty Dopson and Sean Reid who started on the bench. Connor Oliver misses the game through injury.

The first half was abit a slow and cagey as most of the play was in the middle of the park as the two sides tried to figure each other out. In the opening 30 minutes there were chances for Max Emmerson and Dan Lanning, but neither could take them.

The game came into life on the stroke of half time after a reckless stamp from Guisborough player James Frazer seen him head for an early bath and gave Blue Star the chance to take the lead from the spot just before half time.

Up stepped Dan Lanning who calmly converted from the spot sending the keeper the wrong way as he found the bottom left corner as he grabbed his 17th goal of the season.

Lanning came close to doubling his tally as he headed the ball into the back of the net in the 57th minute but it was ruled out for offside.

Blue Star managed to see out the crucial victory as they have jumped to fourth in the table putting them in a strong position.

As for Guisborough they remain in sixth position despite the defeat and will play Easington Colliery next Saturday.

Blue Star are set for another long trip on Tuesday night as they face 13th placed Marske United.
