AFC Newbiggin v Newcastle Blue Star (10/07/2022)

With the new Northern Football Alliance season now underway, there is not a great deal of rest available from the opening weekend and with Blue Star picking up a 2-0 win at home to Percy Main last Saturday, they now go on the road this Wednesday.

A road that ends with AFC Newbiggin acting the destination and with Wednesday’s opposition earning promotion at the end of last season, it will be interesting to see how they fare at a higher level of competition.

Especially after last weekend’s 5-2 loss to Burradon & New Fordley and after being handed something of a baptism of fire just a few days ago, it is fair to say that things will not be a great deal easier in midweek.

Because with Blue Star looking rather comfortable just a few days ago, they will now look to cultivate a head of steam at the start of the season and the only way to do it, is by building on the win that is already in the bank.

Not only that, but it was a win that showed that even with success, this side has a lot more to offer on the field and if they can pick up maximum points after a rigorous pre-season behind them, it does not bode well for the teams they will face later in the campaign.

With that said, you can only take one game at a time and the next game is against AFC Newbiggin – opposition that will certainly have a point to prove, after failing to pick up any in their opening showing.

A point that will suggest Wednesday’s hosts are not here to simply make up the numbers in the top tier of the Alliance and because of this, Blue Star will underestimate the opposition at their own peril.

Which is why this midweek encounter should be an entertaining one for both sets of supporters. A big thanks to AFC Newbiggin for the upcoming hospitality and for those who will be attendance from an away perspective, safe travels both there and back.
